George Fitzclarence, Earl of Munster, was the eldest of the ten children of William, Duke of Clarence and later King William IV of Great Britain by his mistress, the actress Dorothea Jordan. He served in the army in Europe and India and later wrote an account of his travels and the war in India. Although illegitimate, until almost to the end of his life he probably hoped for a place in the royal order of succession to the throne. His later years were blighted by financial problems, quarrels with his father and possibly ‘the royal malady’, porphyria, and his life ended in tragedy. This short life includes notes on his brothers and sisters, his children, the later Earls of Munster, and a select bibliography. (Length approx. 14,000 words)
George Fitzclarence Earl of Munster Son of King William IV eBook John Van der Kiste
Upon the death of Princess Charlotte, only child of George IV, together with her first baby, the royal princes, sons of George III and younger brothers of George IV, were sent scrambling to produce a legitimate heir to the throne. Prince Fredrick the second brother died without an heir, so the third, William came into focus. William was not childless, but the mother of his ten children was Mrs. Jordan, an actress, who was not royal and not acceptable as a royal consort. His children were illegitimate and not eligible for the throne. These children were disparagingly referred to as "The Fitzclarences." Victoria, later Queen Victoria, only child of the fourth brother, was carefully protected by her mother from any contact with these children as she was growing up. I always wondered about these disparaged individuals. This is the story of the oldest of the Fitzclarences, another George. He was a well-built, handsome young man, sent off to battle in his teen-aged years by his royal father, who later became William IV. How did he feel? He distinguished himself in his army career, but how did his impossible position affect his life? You will find out in this book.Product details

George Fitzclarence Earl of Munster Son of King William IV eBook John Van der Kiste Reviews
Way too short and lacking on details. Van der Kiste has been publishing very short books about more obscure members of royal families in Europe with little detail.
